PLEASE HELP!!!

i just bought a 91 rs 305 TBI YESTERDAY. and the battery is **** and it wont hold a charge and the cables are not the right lenghths so they are stretched to make it to the battery. today i was driving it to autozone to get a new battery and cables. It shut off on me and had no power, the cable came off the battery. i hooked it back on and the car started and smelled like it was burning VERY rich, it had an up and down idle and shooting out white smoke. i shut the car off and it would still runfor about 5 seconds.i then had it towed to an autoshop parking lot. i had all the wires hooked onto the battery so i dont know what it could be. it ran perfectly fine before this happened and did not run rich at all.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME

yes it was white smoke, and the check engine will not shoot any codes. i was thinking head gasket but the oil on the dipstick looks fine. im thinking maybe something could have happened with the ECU?

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!

Ya, I got two of them, both came off a 305 TBI. One was an auto and one was a manual. The transmission does matter because the computer controls the TCC solenoid. Also I'll need your numbers off of your computer to make sure its the same. The one I got for an Auto i'll give it to ya free if you can use it. It should work but it some how it got put into a box and found its way to someones elses house and I dont how it was handled. But as long as it didnt get dropped or thrown around it should be fine.

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!

The first route to go before you go replacing an ECU is to look at the obvious things:

- Check Your Fluids
- Investigate a blown head gasket
- Inspect your hoses
- Inspect your radiator

Really just look everything over, I can't see a bad battery causing a car to do anything other than die/stall. If you don't see anything obvious, run a diagnostic.

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!

hey ittthe mechanic i had the car towed to and they didnt get a chance to look at it yet. but he said if the battery connections werent on good enough and the car was not getting enough power from the battery then it may just flood it self and have a very erratic idle and run really rich and smoke and smell like gas. has this happen to anyone else? is this possible? and i only drove it maybe like a half a mile before it died and he said usualy the head gasket will have to be heated up a little before it goes.

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!

normally fuel injected engines dont just up and flood its kind of hard especially when there would be no power to run the pump or the injectors....

bring it to another mechanic...

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!

well today i replaced the battery cables, battery, changed the oil, and put in a new pcv valve. and started it right up not shooting any smoke and idle was steady and normal. the oil didnt look like it had any water in it so idk maybe a battery can cause it to run real rich and have a real bad idle and stay running after shut it off maybe. weird
