TPI to Carb (?)
Well, my 305 took a dump so I figured while I was replacing it I might as well drop in a 350.
I have a couple of options I'm looking at right now both rebuilt and in the $400 - $500 range. The only problem is my 305 was TPI and both these engines are carb.
I'd really like to stick to TPI since that is the car's native setup and the best way to avoid problems or robbing power, but if It's the only shot I got right now I'm gonna have to take it. Besides, I figure it can't be so bad since the american muscle trend is to go carbed.
So saying that I could get the complete engine from carb to oil pan, what else would need to be done for an effective swap? Also, what ECM would be needed (engine codes and years pending, just a rough idea on that one).

You just need a chip for the ECM.. you can use the same intake, base plate etc.. aslong as the intake manifolds bolt paterns are the same on the 350's heads.. (87-92.. four middle holes are on a 72' and 85-86 are all on a 90')
You can run the stock injectors, but you will loose power.. search ebay for a chip and a pair of 22-28# injectors, and you will be good to go.

Sorry you kind of lost me there. So saying my engine is an 85' 305 TPi and the engine I'm getting is a 72' 350 carb the TPI intake on mine should bolt right up to the 350?

Correct, '55-'85 had used the same intake bolt paterns. You will be good to go for that, the only thing you will need is a cam that is computer compatible.. Post in the classifieds saying you need a memcal for a 85' L98 (350 TPI) ECU, and a L98 TPI cam from a 85-86 thirdgen (sense the 350 is a 72' its flat tappet) so you will need a cam from 85-86. 87 they went roller. remember, upgrading your injectors is a good idea.

Re: TPI to Carb (?)
OK, so let's say the only thing wrong with this engine is the wrong type of lifters were used (hydraulic), and it bent the pushrods. So all I need are some new pushrods, a new set of lifters (what type would I be looking for now?) And a cam to match (The one you spoke of?).
Also, if I get that memcal, shouldn't I just be able to use the cam out of my 305 TPI granted it isn't trashed?
As for the injectors, I remember a 305 to 350 swap post right here on thirdgen that mentioned using 65 lb/hr injectors with the police caprice chip. Does not not apply here?

To keep things simple, and keep from loosing H.P. from the 350, you need to get a 350 TPI cam.
Now sense you said the 350 is a '72, its flat tappet. Aslong as the valves/springs are still okay from the wrong lifters, all you should need is a set of rods, and hydraulic flat tappet lifters.
Basically, regardless.. to make this thing work right, you need to get an 85'-86' L98 tpi cam, and the 85' memcal. Make sure you get a memcal for a 85' 350, as that ECM was only used for one year.
----------
Do you have AIM/MSN?
----------
As far as using 65# injectors.. Have fun paying for gas!
You need a bigger intake, etc etc to use that big of an injector. Stay in the 22-28 range.

Re: TPI to Carb (?)
wait... wrong lifters? like used roller lifters in a flat tappet block or like hyd lifter in a block that once had solids?

He says that they put rollers in a flat tappet block, and used the same pushrods instead of something from a retro kit.. so i guess the lifers are obviously useless, and he will needs new rods..

Re: TPI to Carb (?)
no he said hydraulic lifters...nothing about roller anything... if you bent push rods you bent valves... unless there was something specifically interfering with the push rods that some how gained enough mechanical advantage to bend them...
you can put a solid or hyd lifter in any SBC block they don't care same thing with roller lifters any block will take them as long as some provision whether it is link bars or dog bones are in place to prevent them from spinning but even if they did spin... you would lose the cam and lifters cant really See you losing a push rod from it
