010 or 014 block questions
I have a couple blocks and I'm looking to get rid of one of them.
One is a 010 and the other is a 014 - both 4 bolt.
I have read here that there are some blocks that come with either a lifter alignment or starter alignment problem - or both.
Does anyone here have any info on which block casting #s are prone to those problems?
RB83L69 had the answer to that for me at one time, but he hasn't posted in a while, and I couldn't find the info in a search.
Thanks in advance

Re: 010 or 014 block questions
What year is the 014 block from?
I think they are both pretty generic. You'd have to get a machine shop to look over both to see which is better, I doubt one casting number is better from the other, sight unseen.
I'd want to mag both of them, check bore size, check main cap bore straightness, and maybe even lifter alignment.
If those all checked out, i'd just flip a coin. I imagine after those checks one block will be slightly ahead of the other. (maybe even sonic check to see which one has more bore thickness?)
If you're not building something over 400HP, I wouldn't sweat it either way.

Re: 010 or 014 block questions
Theres nothing particularly special about either casting to make it better than the other. They were basically the same casting, but at a different plant IIRC.
As Sonix suggested - take them to a machine shop, let them check it out, and use whichever one is in better shape.

Re: 010 or 014 block questions
Cool... Guys - Thanks
My 014 block has been bored tanked and magged.
From what I've read here, checking the lifter bore alignment is a process that most machine shops aren't prepared to deal with.
I think I'll list that 014 4 bolt in classifieds and on ebay.
I'm in northern Ca if anyone wants to make an offer.
