e1090p elgin solid lift camshaft

ok finally got engine started using e1090p solid cam from elgin ,this thing is nasty but i cant figure out the total timing this thing likes it has been said that 36 degrees total works with this cam but it responds better at 34 degrees is there anyone out there that has run this cam before what was your total timing set at (with no vacuum advance) this thing has 462,s on it and kb hypers 10.1 to 1 performer rpm 3800 conv. just looking for someone who has used this stick ,maybe ill leave it at 34 degrees ---------------------------bigzeke355cid92bird

I used that cam in a 350 with 12.6:1 cr and ported big valve 416 heads and a holley strip dominator. Timing was locked out at 36° BTDC.

Take it to the track and see that timing gives the best MPH.

Re: e1090p elgin solid lift camshaft

there are all sorts of variables that will effect what the engine wants for timing no one can give you the best answer it is up to trial and error

Those old '60's heads will want lots of timing, compared to new AFR's or vortecs for example. Dyno testing time.

The pistons were hyper flat tops. The cr was 12.65:1. No detontation when using the proper fuel (110 octane unleaded).

For racing use a cooler than stock spark plug.
The "stock" heat range spark plug is a compromise for low rpm stop and go city driving. A motor that is used primarily for high performance use needs a different spark plug.

You do not tune the timing to the point of detonation. You adjust the timing to find the best point which make the most reliable power.
If you're getting detonation at 36 ° BTDC timing (even if that is not the best power point), something is wrong. (one lean cylinder, glowing hot spot in the chamber) inaccurate timing, spark scatter, wrong fuel for compression ratio etc)
Its not uncommon for the timing tab accuracy to be out by quite a few degrees. Start by finding true TDC using a piston stop.

According the KB/UEM , their propriatory hyper alloy pistons run best with slightly less spark timing than usual . They recommend around 34°BTDC for best power.

The more closer your motor is (high compression) to the auto ignition point of the fuel you are using, the more critical the tune up.
The cam made very good power from 3500 rpm to well beyond 6500rpm in my motor. Definitely liked to rev.
The cam I used was actually from Accelerated Motion Cams but is the exact grind. It's a common used oval track/bracket race cam. Valve to piston clearance is very close on a motor with generously shaved heads and a decked block.
That motor came unglued from using the wrong fuel octane for the very high cr (my mistake).

The elgin 1090 cam is a pimp been using them for rears for 1/4 mile racing . Cam good till 7200 but runs it fastest shifting at 6200 due to low compressor 10-1 when i thought the traps the bitches is pulling hard and loving it same cam in 6 different race cars
