Troubleshoot my starter problem

When I bought my car it had the wrong starter on it. It was a newer smaller type with the wrong amount of teeth, it wasn't a high torque. Since it had the wrong teeth it wouldn't catch the flywheel all the time and sometimes took about 10 tries for it to catch and sounded horrible when it did catch. So of course I bought a reman starter from advance the one that was supposed to go on it and it worked fine for a week then the starter gear broke so I went and got a new one and the same thing happened so I used the old one that wasn't ment for it. Not too long after that I spun a bearing so the engine was getting rebuilt so of course I went ahead and got another starter a better starter for it and put it on when the engine was on the stand so I could make sure it was aligned 100% perfect with the new flywheel. Dropped it in the car and what do you know it's working fine for a little while and then breaks the teeth. I said **** it im going to but a high torque starter and see if that helps and it did for about 3 weeks it's been fine and now it's starting to miss the flywheel every now and then. I haven't check to see if it's missing teeth but I will eventually... It's not as bad as the others usually it will catch for a second then just spin freely and work on the next try.

A few days ago when switching gears over 2k rpm my transmission would move and hit something so I crawled under there and noticed it was missing two bolts on the transmission mount which was allowing it to slide left and right(found one of the bolts in the driveway). Im wondering if maybe my tranny is not lined up right causing it to miss some how? th350\90 iroc

Re: Troubleshoot my starter problem

Go to a GM dealer and get the right starter mounting bolts and a starter brace for the back of the starter.

Re: Troubleshoot my starter problem

The high torque came with new bolts and where exactly does the bracket go? There's a piece of metal bolted near the starter now i'll try and take a pic with my camera phone tomorrow or so.

Re: Troubleshoot my starter problem

the piece in the pic bolts to the front of the starter.on the factory style starter the 2 bolts that hold the starter together from the front, 1 of the bolts is longer ,the piece goes on that bolt and to the engine block to take pressure off the back of starter.later jimmy
