Retro Fitting a LT1 Roller Camshaft

Hi all,

I'm currently building up parts for my 383 build and I just wanted to be exactly clear as to what I need to do to Retro Fit an LT1 Camshaft.

Its a Gen1 SBC, 2pc rear seal, Flat tappet cam setup originally.

I've got a Comp Cams LT1 Cam - http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/07-306-8/10002/-1
Comp Cams Retro Roller Lifters - http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp%20Cams/249/853-16/10002/-1
Timing Set with Torrington Bearing -http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/20410//-1
and a Cam Button - http://www.jegs.com/i/Cloyes/220/9-200/10002/-1

Pushrods - I have a flat cam standard set and a roller cam standard set -will these be OK?

Is this all I need? I beleive the LT1 Cam needs to be modified on the front to remove the pin? What is the exact procedure for the bearings and cam buttons.

I just want to make 100% sure...

Re: Retro Fitting a LT1 Roller Camshaft

You don't remove the pin, as thats what aligns the cam on the timing gear. Some LT1 cams need to have that pin shortened however. Just get it fairly close to a regular SBC cam and you'll be fine. Its just for alignment untill the 3 bolts are tightened on the timing gear.

As for pushrods - flat tappet ones won't work, they will be too long, I guarantee it. What heads are you using? Some aftermarket heads are slightly taller than GM heads, so that changes the length needed too. Best bet is to get an adjustable pushrod length checker and find out exactly what you need. They aren't expensive, its basically just a telescoping pushrod that you use when you mock everything up to check the length, then order what you need.

I gotta ask though... if you are building a bigger small block like a 383, why use the little LT1 cam?

Re: Retro Fitting a LT1 Roller Camshaft

Operating Range: 1800-5800 RPM
Duration Advertised: 290° Intake / 307° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 230° Intake / 244° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.5 Rockers: .510'' Intake / .540'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°

Thats the cam specs, like a dummy I orderd an LT1 cam rather than just a standard roller cam. I've got some AFR 195's to go on
