383 question
ok, so i sold one of my cars and now have money to tear the GTA apart and fix the insuides (pison rings). My question is, what exactl;y is a 383? i understand its basically just a 350 w/ a 400 crank right? im thinking about puttign a 400 crank into the GTA while i do the rings, and figured i better ask before i do something i shouldnt. Anyways, let me know guys, thank you!!!!

Re: 383 question
a 4.03" Bore and 3.75"stroke=383" you'd have to have a new crank and new pistons along with probably new heads if your using a stock 350 to get it to run nice..im doing a 383 right now actually i just ordered a kit today for it along with a new cam....if your 350 is stock you might want to buy a new cam too....and since you'll be putting out more power a new stall converter as ii figured out.....what is all in the engine spec wise do you know

Re: 383 question
i am probably not going to do the 383, i dont know if i have the budget for it, probably just going to repair the 350 and add a few parts, heraders and whatnot.

Re: 383 question
A 400 crank is designed for a 2 piece rear main block. The 400 crank gives a longer stroke. boring the block .030" with the longer stroke gives 383 CID.
To put a 400 crank into any other 2 piece rear main SBC, the mains of the crank need to be machined down to fit into the block.
The common swap was to use the 400's short con rods with standard off the shelf 350 pistons. If you want to use the 350's longer rods, you need special stroker pistons which put the wrist pin up closer to the rings.
The 400 crank is also externally balanced. You need a balancer and flexplate balanced for a 400 crank.
Chances are if you can even find a 400 SBC to get the crank, just build up the 400 instead. If you want to build a 383, buy a new aftermarket crank. 400's haven't been produced since 1979 so they're getting hard to find.

Re: 383 question
The best route to building a stroker is to buy the entire rotating assembly. You can get it already balanced and there are no worries about compatibility. I'm building a 383 right now for my 84 Z28. I ordered a Scat rotating assembly with a forged steel crank, forged rods, and it comes with forged Mahle pistons.
I'm topping the motor with an Edelbrock roller cam & lifters, Victor Jr. 215cc/64cc heads, air gap manifold, and AVS carb. I can't wait to get it all assembled and dropped in.
