EGR valve question

MY engine light came on today so i did the whole connect a to b and get the code so i did and it said i have a EGR failure. I have a 91 RS with a 3.1L v6 so i have a electric EGR and i was talking to a parts store employee and he said that i can take the EGR valve off and spray carb cleaner in there to clean the carbon off of it. but i was wondering can i do that to a electric one or only a vacuum EGR?

Oh yeah i also have a question about synthetic oil. right now i am runnin conventional oil but i want to switch to synthetic. and i need an oil change here soon, so can i just do a regular oil change and put synthetic in instead of conventional? or is there a special way to switch to synthetic

Re: EGR valve question

The EGR valve may be inoperative, may have a leak, or the exhaust passages may be plugged. The valve pintle and seat can be cleaned by scraping with a small screwdriver, pick, or other appropriate item. Use and spray cleaners sparingly.

The EGR passages could also be plugged or fouled with carbon, and can be cleaned with compressed air, and piece of stiff wire, scrapers, whatever. You cna use spray cleaners here and as much as you like.

There is no special method to change to synthetic lubricants. Just use a good quality oil filter (a.k.a., NOT an orange one).

Re: EGR valve question

haha of course not an orange one, i am going with a K&N filter and either mobil 1 or castrol syntec.

as for the EGR i took it off and the gasket fell apart haha, so i got a new one and that still didnt help, when i start the car it starts and the rpm's drop to where its almost about to die, then it revs itself for like 3 seconds then stops and if i drive the car for a little bit and just let it idle it drops rpm's and revs it self and it keeps doing it... could this be something other than the EGR?
