Camshaft Question

I just pulled the cam out of my spare 305.Its a LG4 with 601 heads. I was wanting to know what kind of cam it is. At the back end of it the casting says Energizer chs278h10. And under neath those numbers it has 11 35 91. I think that is a crane cam but I cant find any info on those numbers. Can anyone help. Thanks

Re: Camshaft Question

Here's the specs:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku

That's a pretty big cam for a 305 with stock heads. The powerband is 2500-5800 rpm. What are you planning on using it in?

Re: Camshaft Question

I was planning on dropping it in my 88 as a Daily driver. Its a TBI. I figured I would have to get a custom chip for it, even with the 601 heads.

Re: Camshaft Question

I'm wondering if I am going to need to get a better fuel pump and bigger injectors if I use this engine. How bad does that cam effect gas mileage? Probably worse than my hemi. Oh well maybe I'll stop getting my butt kicked by 4 cylinders.

Re: Camshaft Question

Terrible cam for your application, especially if it's a daily driver.

You should look in the stickies at the top of the TBI forum about the Vortec/LT1 roller cam swap. That would be WAY better then that Crane cam you have.

I Desktop Dyno'd the Vortec cam against that Crane cam on the same engine.

DD2003 shows that the Vortec cam has +43ft-lbs @ 2000rpm more then the Crane, and +19ft-lbs @ 3500rpm (peak torque).

The Crane cam only comes out on top at +14hp @ 5000rpm.

Here's a screenshot. The solid line is the Vortec cam and the dotted line is the Crane cam.

Re: Camshaft Question

Thanks. I'll have to get me one those desktop dynos. I am going to try it and see it how it does. I don't really drive the car that much anyway. I know my gas mileage is going to suffer. Thats what I got my scooter for. LOL. Am I going to need bigger injectors?

Injectors? I'm not sure TBI can even be tuned to run a cam with that duration and small lobe sep. Not to mention changing your converter and maybe rear.

Re: Camshaft Question

Sounds like my parts list is getting bigger. LOL One way or another I am going make this engine work in my car. My car has T tops, is the body going to be strong enough?

Re: Camshaft Question

You need to re think what you are doing here. Slapping that cam in your tbi 305 is going to be a disaster. The ecm is not very forgiving to major cam changes. You also have a superior roller cam setup that you are going to loose over a mismatched cam.

Re: Camshaft Question

You don't think if I get a bigger TBI and tune the computer it will do any good. I got this engine and would like to use it. When I had this engine in my old Firebird, I thought it ran good for a 305. Are these heads with that cam just better suited for carbed engines?

Re: Camshaft Question

Has anyone ever used this online dyno before? Is it accurate?
And whats the head flow for 601 heads. Thats the only one I am not sure about and how much do are cars weigh? I was thinking some where around 200 for the head flow. I really dont know though. The numbers filled out are default numbers when you first visit the page, not my numbers.
