Roller cam retainer problem..
I have an early 90's 350 roller block, and a 89 305 roller block. I was planning on using the hardware from the 305 to install a roller cam in the 350 block. The spider tray bolts right up but the retainer for the front of the cam doesn't line up with the bolt holes on the block. Would it be ok to elongate the holes in the 305 retainer to make it bolt up to the 350?? Are there actually different retainers or something?
Re: Roller cam retainer problem..
The factory cam retaining plates came in 2 different varieties differing only in bolt spacing. Souds like you need the "other" one than you've currently got. Sorry, I don't have part numbers, but I'm sure somebody will chime in with them. It was a model year kind of change. Before a certain year, one bolt spacing, after a certain year a different one.

scoggin dickey has the cam retainer plate for like 11 bucks i think it is. i had to get one for my motor which is a newer style block
GM used a different plate for the 91-99 blocks.

Re: Roller cam retainer problem..
Cool that's exactly what I needed! Can anyone point me in the right direction of a double roller that will fit with a factory roller cam on scoggin dickey? I can't figure out which is the correct part and I want to order both parts togather, thanks guys!
Re: Roller cam retainer problem..
Double rollers often require doing a little "clearancing" of the oil galley boss above the cam and possibly other clearance issues. If you want a true bolt-on then look at the GMPP SINGLE ROLLER chain set. It's a very good set for a high performance street engine (better than a stock chain):

i dont know if my block was already clearanced or not, but i used a rollermaster billet double roller timing chain and it cleared everything just fine

Re: Roller cam retainer problem..
Thats interesting that you mentioned that, on my other 350 in my vette I simply bolted a coyles double roller on when i was putting it togather with no clearance issues, on this current engine for my maro I removed a double roller that someone put on it previously with a little stretch to it and i noticed a chunk missing at the top of the oil galley boss above the cam and was left scratching my head as to what caused it.. guess that explains it.

Re: Roller cam retainer problem..
that kit says two retainers are included
retainer P/N 10168501, retainer P/N 10088128,
so that means that both styles are included to fit both block styles
the first part number listed is for the 91-99 blocks, same one i got
