Not thirdgen specific engine questions.

I wanted some info about different engines that I could build with a 350 block. I want to not only take into account cost to build and power output, but also fuel economy and strength.

So lets say I was going to build a off a 350 block I have in the garage. The block I plan to use has been bored .40 over due to wear and tear on it, and it has the four bolt main caps. If I was to stay with a stock crank shaft, but I had forged pistons and rods, how high could the lower end rev before coming apart? Also, what kind of nitrous shot could it take without breaking pieces?

What if I went with a cheaper Eagle kit that would include a cast crank, forged rods, and forged pistons? Leaving everything else the same, how much worse fuel millage will a 383 get than a 350 with the same mods? What if I went with a 327? Still a cast crank, how high could I rev this one? I know that engine would have less torque, so I would think I would have to be in a lower gear when just driving it. Would it be much more efficient? Would it be able to take a shot of Nitrous just as good as the compared 350 or 383?

I know that when building a car with nitrous you want to sure you get a cam with a higher exhaust duration than intake.

I would like to go fuel injected as well, so whats the best way to do this when the engine is going into a car without original fuel injection?? I mean, Holly sells some aftermarket kits for 3k, but could the TPI system off a third gen IROC work just as good? I have heard TPI doesn’t like the higher revving engines. What makes the Steal ram or the MPFI better? How much better are they? Since I have never tried to tune a F.I. engine, which is going to be more user friendly? What is the CHEAPEST way to get a fuel injection system to handle a higher revving engine with Nitrous?

Now, is there any truth to the guys that have a computer with them in there car, and they just shut off the car and can adjust the timing curve and the air fuel mixture without getting out of the car? That would be neat, but how much of a difference does it make if your running a large cam? I mean, other than just dumping more fuel in.....

My one last question is about throttle response. I dont want to use the term drifting, because that implies either experts that have WAY more skill than I can ever hope for, or stupid kids I want to be nothing like. I want to build this engine to not just accelerate fast, but also when I floor it I want to hear the tires shred. Throttle response is just as important as the 1/4 mile performance.

Wow, that was a small novel. Please share what ever you know with me. If you are not sure of something, thats fine. Please provide your input anyway, just include that your not 100% sure. We are all here to learn

Let me amend that, you can not build a 327 without getting a forged Crank.

Re: Not thirdgen specific engine questions.

Most model year 1968 and left over 1969 327s had cast cranks.

Almost all (if not all) the 1962 through 1967 model year 327s had forged cranks.

Re: Not thirdgen specific engine questions.

is the .040 fresh, or does it need to be cleaned up again? if it needs to be rebored i personally would pick up a new block (the is definietly no shortage of 350 blocks out there).

as far as redline goes, you could get a 350 or a 383 to spin pretty high, if everything is properly balanced and with an equally competent valve train.

machine work is definitely something to not skimp out on.

i would go all forged if you can spare the cash.

TPI setups definitely do not like higher RPM's. for the money i would go carbed. you could pick up a carb in need of a rebuild for less than $50 and get a rebuild kit for ~$100 if you choose to do it yourself. (i just finished my holley 3310-1 780 CFM and it wasnt bad at all). i would put more money into the internal components and go carbed than spend all of that money for an aftermarket EFI system.

finally, check out Scat. their stroker kits are pretty cheap and i havent heard anything bad about them.

Re: Not thirdgen specific engine questions.

307 uses the same crank as the large journal 327... I doubt any 307 every had a forged anything from GM. All small journal 327 cranks were forged.
