Need Help Installing Holley (Red) Electric Fuel pump--Where?

Hey guys,

I'm actually finally pulling my old motor this week and installing the new one!! WOO HOO!! A problem I have run into however is that while the new motor has the mounting plate for a mechanical fuel pump, it's not actually drilled for it. So, heeding advice here on the boards I went out and purchased one of the holley "red" electric fuel pumps. Also from the advice on the boards (and the directions), I know that I need to place this as close to the fuel tank as possible...however I can't find a place that will fit the pump. It's just too physically big to mount back there.

I followed the fuel lines back to the tank and see where the 3/8" hard line switches to the rubber hose...and let me say that I'm very afraid of touching that connection based on the corrosion on it. That, and if I break the rubber line, I have no way of getting the tank off to replace it. So anyway, I looked high and low back there and can't find a place to install it.

The only place I feel comfortable putting it is way up in the front where the 3/8" hard lines switch to rubber to go to my mechanical fuel pump (It would go along the frame by the coolant overflow). Now I know everyone says these work better as "pushers" than pullers, but how much extra wear and tear will be put on this if I mount it that way? Could any of you who have installed this pump post some pictures of where you have it on your cars? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If your steel lines on the tank look so bad they my break if you touch them you need to stop right now and replace them, and what do you mean you have no way to take the tank off? That's better than burning you car up when the line breaks. And I had one of those Holly red pumps on my old Dart and had it set up as a puller, it worked fine for me but made so much noise and vibration even mounted on rubber bushings that I replaced it with a good mechanical pump.

They don't look like they'll break, not just by touching them. The connection point is covered in grime and I can't speak for the overall condition of the rubber tubing coming from the tank...it looks old. If I disconnect the two, the steel tubing will probably be ok but more than likely the rubber tubing will be cracked and/or break when I pull on it. It's 23 years old this year after all.

The main problem is I don't have the place where I'm working on it that long. The guy who's helping me gave me this weekend and next weekend as he's going on vacation and won't be around...so that's it. wish I had known his time constraint before we had it all torn apart. But anyway, the lines I can work with, it's just that I don't see any more room there where I can put the pump back there. If I have to, I guess we can get the motor swapped and I tow it to a shop and have them put it in.

So no one can help me as far as where to install this pump? I just don't see any place near the tank to put it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Need Help Installing Holley (Red) Electric Fuel pump--Where?

I just mounted my holley black under the rear tunnel across from the tank. Made sure rear axle has appropriate travel distance to clear the pump. Next I ran extension hose from the line to tank and replaced the rubber hose on the line already. The ran another rubber line out the pump to the line to the carb. If you go lower on the steel line to the carb, it's protected with either under coating or grease which will protect it from rust.

Well, I looked at it again today (50 mile drive to where I've got it to work on) and it looks like I might use the area where the floor-boards go up behind the seats. I'm leery of going into the stock hoses but I'll do that once i get it mounted and know how much room I have to work with. It's either that, or I mount it up on the fender well in the front where the steel lines currently end.

What all was involved in running the new line to the tank or did you just reuse the old line that is already there? Did you just drill into the floorpan back there or find another way to mount it?

Re: Need Help Installing Holley (Red) Electric Fuel pump--Where?

the prior owner already cut a nice little access panel on top to get to the intank fuel pump.all i did was cut the supply line and add new fuel hose.as far as mounting the new pump,i went ( app) 4" over and 4" down from the electrical connector that is back there and drilled thru and bolted the new pump in. It is kinda noisy, but I like knowing its running

There isn't an electrical connector that I can see...unless it's hidden by the tank. Of course, to run the fuel sending unit for the gauge probably has a connector that I can't see.

pull the carpet up from behind the back seat There should be a connector for your fuel level/ fuel pump

Re: Need Help Installing Holley (Red) Electric Fuel pump--Where?

Install it as close to the fuel tank as possible - electric fuel pumps work best as pushers, not pullers. Friend of mine with a Holley Blue pump has it mounted on the underside of the floor right in front of the tank (like, above the axle). Looks like a good spot to me.

Alright, I'll give it a shot...but, hehe I just don't see very much room to work. But it must fit, too many people say it does not to believe them.
