Need Help buying an alternator.

I need an alternator for my car. I have changed them before on other cars, but I do not know a lot about them at all.

I have an 85 T/A 305 TPI and was wondering what amp alternator I should get? Everything is factory except the cd player and 2 10in subs and 1 amp I put in the car. It's not a huge system or anything. I just know that usually you should have a bigger amp alternator depending what systems you have and stuff.

THanks

The stock alternator has plenty of output capacity. I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Need Help buying an alternator.

aletheian,

Make sure you get the A/C Delco alternator. I messed around with pepboy's prostart and literally exchanged it 5 times (life time warrenty) before I forked over the difference of 30 dollars or so for the A/C version. Its been with me for 4 years now and no problem.

If your amp isn't too much of a draw (300-400 watts) and even if you had a larger amp just get a capacitor either a 1 or 2 farad of course its all relative to the extra draw from your audio system. Remember, always ground your system properly and get the appropriate size power and ground wires.

So in my opinion, I would highly recommend the stock A/C Delco over any other brand and if you need extra juice (when the bass hits your headlights/cluster panel etc dim) then get the appropriate capacitor.

Re: Need Help buying an alternator.

you need a compasitor for your amp, for 2 10" subs, i got the 1.2 farad compasitor, i know they are pricey, but dont skimp out. installation is easy. straigt 4g. wire from the battery, to a in line fuse, then to the compasitor, then from the compasitor to the amp. also ground the compasitor, and the amp to eachother. you need a good one with 4 terminals. power in, power out, ground in, ground out. chassis ground into the compasitor, then out of the compasitor to the amp. its simple, but can be a wire mess, use the 4 guage wire tho, it dont let me down, and you really need it. good luck, p m me if you need anything.
