steering column fix help

I am going to change out the turn signal switch and tighten the steering column joint but i can't get the plastic cap off. I pulled the wheel and there is a plastic cap that sits infront of the lock plate. I looked at the Haynes book and it said pop the cap off with a flat head driver, and the pic does not have an airbag. The pic shows two spots you can do this at but mine does not have them. When I try to pop the cap it will not come out and feels like it will break. Mine has an airbag and there is a yellow part in the center. I do not want to break this. I also saw a post by Vader that will be helpful if I can get the cap off.
