Hi.
Im new to this board...but my parents bought this 88 gta when i was 8.
Now im 27.
and i know for the last 15 yrs at least 50 50 everytime you shut the car off, when u start it it puffs blue oil smoke for 5 sec then its gone.

now its 20yrs old. it has 225kms on the original 305 tpi 5 speed motor.

in the last 5 yrs it hasnt been drivin alot due to repairs...but as of today i have fixed all of the stuff.

in the last 5 yrs it has been starting to smoke worse and worse...and now if i let it idle in the driveway for tem min or more it starts to smoke minorly...and if i drive it it pours out for 20 sec then gone.
but when im driving it still has lots of power, no engine lights, this car has been maintained mint.
now 2 yrs ago...i can see blue out the tailpipe when i floor it, minor blue...but blue.

now is it the pistons and rings?
or is it the valve guides and the seals?

i really need some expert help.

i want to tear the heads off it and get then rebuilt new...but i dont want to do it if its not gonna fix the problem.
ive heard that 305 gm motors have horrible valve guides and seals.
PLS HELP ME

 

before you jump into a major project check easy stuff first . first remove valve covers , ck. that oil drain holes at lwr. front & rear of cylinder heads are not sludged up . if they don't allow oil to drain properly back to crankcase you get excess oil in valve area & smoke . good luck .

 

Try seafoaming it before anything its 8 bucks and might be al lyou need to clear those combustion chambers up.

 

It's the valve stem seals.

 

so does you think i should take the heads off and get them rebuilt?

is it worth it when the block has 225kms on it?

my mom and dad drove it for the first 13 yrs and babied it...never spun the tires...
i got it and i had fun in highschool and i still do now and then.

i just dont want to do all the work and it be the rings.

 

do this first , then possibley valve seals . easy to do , cheap , lots less time and money .
