engine was rebuilt and now won't run long, smokes around engine
we had our 305 rebuilt with new block about 500 miles ago. we were told to bring it in after that to have the engine redialed in after the new parts got seated some. the car has been running great. we took it in and he said he couldn't do the timing b/c the balancer had slipped and he thought our old one was fine but now isn't. he said it was off by 80 degrees. he said it was o.k. to drive it but I decided not to anyway. the car had still been running great. i went out to start it yesterday and it started fine then after about two minutes the idle started to drop and the engine started to run really rough with smoke from the back of the engine and exhaust and it just dies. it then won't start back. we have an edelbrock carb and he said he put a small filter, like a rock, into the carb. we watched the video and this carb doesn't have an internal filter so we bought an inline one like the video said. we looked where he said he put one in and there is nothing there. could this have broken and gotten into the carb and is allowing too much fuel in now? he showed us what it looked like and the filter looked like a little rock. he said this is the best type to put in but there is no sign of one in the carb. could this be my problem? it started up great and sounded great until after two minutes and just bogs down. I can smell some fuel. any help? I'm tired of spending money on it. I feel like i've just wasted 1,000s on this car since I still can't drive it.

Sounds like you blew a head gasket, that white smoke has nothing to do with the carburetor or it's filter(in line filters are fine,I'm running one zero problems).
Definitely check for coolant leaks around the head, or even check your coolant level if it's low thats a good indication, also open your radiator cap and start your engine then look for bubbles rising up to the filler neck if you see any bubbles that's another sign of a blown head gasket.
Hope i could help.

just pulled two spark plugs and they were black and dripping with gas off them. these plugs were brand new. the carb was adjusted towards the lean side but not too lean. it was definitely gas all over the plugs. it dripped when i took it out and dripped on my hand. you could smell it. also forgot to mention it does have an exhaust leak around the y-pipe for some reason. could it be this so called filter he put in broke down and is now in the carb float area causing the float to stay low so fuel keeps going in?

Just took the top of the carb off to see if anything like a small filter was in it and nothing. he said he put one inside and we've run 500 miles with no fuel filter. could this be the cause? if so how can i fix this running rich dumping fuel into it. the floats are fine. I don't have an o2 sensor anymore. it's there but not used. none of the smog is on and a lot of the ecm isn't used anymore. like I said, we haven't drove it since we were told we needed a new balancer. we start it just to move it out of the way of the other cars and it' s been great until yesterday. gets a strong fuel smell after about two minutes black smoke for a while idle, drops even if giving it gas and it dies.

I looked over the inside of the carb very well. there was a lot of debris inside of it since it didn't have a filter for a while. i cleaned it out, readjusted the choke b/c it was still opened even though the engine was cold and put it back together. it started fine and i was able to take it down the road. ran great like it did when we got it back from the shop. it still has the leak around the y-pipe even though we put new exhaust on. hopefully it's o.k. and we can get it to the shop on Mon. to have the new balancer and a/c put on.
