what now!
ok i just swapped out a 305 to a 350 carbed motor, there both carbd. anyways i put new plugs in it gapped .45 on the gap gauger. the problem is it will rotate but wont fire, i got both spark and gas going to the engine. while attemptin to start and adjust timing itll shoot gas and puff out the carb. we checked it it was 180 off. fixed that and now it does the same thing. the batt is only givin me 8 cranking amps. would that be a problem staritn? or am i still outta time?

Re: what now!
put a battery in there
how do you know you are getting spark
find no 1 tdc and set the plug wires

Re: what now!
How on earth do you know it's only giving you 8 cranking amps? That's not enough to even come close to cranking the motor over, not that there's any way you could even measure that anyway...
is it spinning the motor over remotely fast enough?
If you think it has fuel, then it's spark. No questions, that's the most common problem in your shoes now.
Crank it over while you adjust the timing.

Re: what now!
That doesn't make sense.
A volt gauge would read in volts, not amps. 8 Volts is also low.
Anyway, problem solved eh? Right on.

Re: what now!
Set your timing to best power, without any detonation. Try 14* or so.
Use timing tape for the right size balancer.
You'll need to close your throttle blades to bring your idle speed back down. Then set up the idle mixture for best vacuum, etc etc.
Tuning 101 man, do a search on the carb board for more detailed info. Or start a thread if you REALLY GET STUCK. Then make sure to give enough info to get some help. Right now I don't even know what carb you have.

Re: what now!
advance it untill it bucks a little and bring back (retard) untill you get a smooth idle
tighten it down to the point where it is kinda hard to move and drive it
bring it up to about 3500 rpms in second gear and keep on advancing it untill you get spark knock
make sure your car is at operating temp before you take it to 3500
as soon as you get spark knock pull over and back it off or retard it
go one more pass to make sure you dont get any more detonation
go home and shut it down
start it up after 20 min wait time
if it is hard to start then you have to retard it a bit
when it turns and starts freely after very small increments of retardation
tighten it down and put a timing light on it and record
its probably 14 or very close to it like sonix said
