Gasoline in oil?
I finally got my 406 running and I know the carb needs to be tuned and the timing needs to be dialed in but I pulled the dipstick and smelled like gas. I also pulled the valve covers and the oil looked kinda milky. Its a brand new motor so I am hoping its just running too rich due to the timing being off. Any other ideas?

Re: Gasoline in oil?
I was thinking that. The carb isnt the greatest but I was hoping to atleast get the car running. The headers heat up pretty quickly too so I think its also the timing.

Re: Gasoline in oil?
I had a float stick in a edlebrock carb once and it filled my crankcase with gasoline, not saying the timing might be out, but if you are getting too much fuel in the combustion chamber it will make the headers glow

Mechanical fuel pump?
New mechanical fuel pump?
Most likely the diaphragm is ruptured and leaking fuel into the oil.
"Milky" is usually water mixing with the oil. But, if it's a newly built engine, could be assembly lube.

Mixture was retardedly rich, plugs were dripping with gasoline. Getting it all tuned today. Man does this motor sound nice though.

Re: Gasoline in oil?
Either bad mechanical fuel pump, stuck float or bad needle & seat or if you have an electric fuel pump then pressure is too high.

Re: Gasoline in oil?
We pulled the Mech. pump and it smelled like gas like crazy. I'm going to do an oil change and try the new pump. The carb isnt leaking and the car is now timed. Doing a compression test tonight as well.

Compression test showed 120-125 on all cylinders so I'm guessing its not rings. I'll be doing a oil change and the new mech. pump today. After that its checking the intake gasket and ultimately the carb.
