How can you test a distributor?

Is there anyway to test a distributor? When I first put my car back together it ran fine and about a week in it started running like crap.It would backfire and miss. I changed plus and stuff but no good. So I took out the distributor (which was brand new and replaced) problems where gone and things where fine. well here I am about 1200 mile later and I have the same problem. I tried just changing the module in the distributor and there is no difference. Can I have another bad distributor already? Is there a way to test them? Should I buy another one and try it? Any advise ??

Are you sure your getting the distributor hold down clamp seated right and tight? Is the clamp up side down? Is the cap coming loose? I doubt the dist. is bad. Its probably something simple.

Yes I did check the basics.I even changed the cap to an accel cap with brass lugs. I changed the control module inside the cap too. The car ran fine and had alot of get up and go .Just like that it started back firing and running crapy. I pulled the plugs and changed them too. I checked the firing order and that seems fine. I am sure it is somthing minor but a pain to find.
