I recently purchased a 86 z28 camaro. the kid before me installed a rebuilt 350. runs starts and everything but there seems to be a knocking sound at idle and during acceleration. He said if i get it tuned and timed right it should go away. i was wondering if hes right or pulling my leg and have a bigger problem. It is not a stock motor, has comp cam, 305 heads, holley carb edelbrock headers. msd ignition. it used to be a 305. any help would be apprecciated.

if your engine sounds like this then you are ****ed.

in some cases if you hear a knocking and immediately pull over get towed and start stripping the car you can salvage, but in most cases your ****ed.

its not even close to that, lol but i just got a oil change and it got a lil loader. i know it def needs to be timed right and tuned. i can feel that when i drive it. its running real rich to would that have anything to do with it as well

 

well it depends specifically what does it sound like. more of a ticking or more of a metal on metal noice. you may have bent a push rod and if you drive around like that you can crack your head. if it's a ticking lot's of things could be the cause of that. what does it actually sound like cause that youtube link is what real knocking sounds like.

 

i mean its def a knock not a tick except its a deeper knock then the vid and isnt as rapid, if that makes sense

 

yeah sounds like you've thrown a rod, which in MOST cases is not worth fixing, i mean i'm talking complete rebuild and when you get down to the block it might not even be worth rebuilding. so I hope you don't own that car yet, because it sounds like someone is trying to pull a fast one on you. sorry =/


i'm trying to figure out an idling problem right now. it sucks.

 

well unfortunetly i do own it i bought it for 4000, however the knocking wasnt there when i went to look at it. the bodys nice near perfect so it sort of still worth it if i can find something to swap. i am goign to try and put a vid up tom with the knock so let me know when u hear it

 

i'd be more than happy to. man if the bodies good then keep it spend the winter building a motor and come out next season haulin' ***. if it turns out mine is junk that's what i am doing.

but don't get your hopes down yet let some people hear it i'll listen and it may be something realy simple. if your egr is improperly done it'll cause a pretty loud ticking but not in the lines of a knock but it's just one of many examples.

so don't get down yet.
