I SEARCHED FAN SWITCH BUT NEED HELP PLEASE

HI GUYS I,M SURE YOUR SICK OF THIS TOPIC BUT I NEED YOUR OPINION. I HAVE A 91TA 305 TPI THAT I JUST REPLACED THE INTAKE ON AND NEW 195 T STAT NEW AC DELCO EGR VALVE.CAR SEEMS TO RUN FINE BUT IN TRAFFIC AROUND TOWN IT RUNS OVER 220* AND DROPS DOWN TO NORMAL ON THE HIGHWAY. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS NORMAL BUT AS OTHERS SAY IT IS A LITTLE TOO HOT. AFTER A SHORT DRIVE AROUND TOWN I CANT EVEN TOUCH THE HOSES SEEMS VERY HOT.THE FIRST T STAT I CHANGED BUBBLED IN THE OVERFLOW BOTTLE BUT INSTALLED A NEW ONE AND THAT ISSUE QUIT.STILL SEEMS TOO HOT THOUGH. MY QUESTION IS WHAT FAN SWITCH T STAT COMBO IS BEST FOR MY 91TA. SHOULD I RUN THE HYPERTECH 4028 4026 OR GO WITH THE GRAND NATIONAL SWITCH.WHICH T STAT DO I HAVE TO RUN WITH EACH OF THESE OR CAN I STICK TO MY 195 T STAT. ALL I'M LOOKING TO DO IS GET IT TO RUN IN THE 195-200 RANGE OR COOLER IF I CAN WHAT EVER IS BETTER, BUT I DONT WANT TO SCREW WITH THE COMPUTER MY CAR IS ALL STOCK

Re: I SEARCHED FAN SWITCH BUT NEED HELP PLEASE

no need for the caps, we all can read normal text just fine.

regarding the issue, i would go for a 180* (personally i run a 160, but i am carbed and i dont know if TPI would be fussy with a 160), i havent heard any issues with a 180*. as far as brand, i would only trust Stant. i have tried other brands in various cars and they were alright, but stant is the only way i would go (as i have had substantially fewer issues).

i would wire the fan to a switch that you could control, i am not sure about how that would work with TPI, but i did that on my 1987 LG4 and it was nice, as long as you remember to turn it off when you get out of the car (i chose to wire it constant hot so i could let it run a little while after if need be).

as far as coolent goes, i would always add the Redline Water Wetter (my temps have always dropped a little bit with Redline), so that might help a bit.

one final thought is if you just replaced the intake manifold, are you sure you the gaskets were installed correctly? that could cause issues, or even an incorrectly installed t-stat.

Re: I SEARCHED FAN SWITCH BUT NEED HELP PLEASE

sorry about the smilies. I've worked on cars since I was 14 now 41. Yes the gaskets are in right as the same with the t stat. I'm not too familiar with the tpi setup. Back in my day if I wanted a cooler temp I would go with a lower t stat. I didnt know what i had to do with the tpi setup. Everything seems fine the way it runs etc but my guage reads a little over 220. My question is should i go with the 180 hypertech t stat and the 200 fan switch or just the stant 180 t stat or just the grand national switch. I dont really want to wire up my fan direct.

Re: I SEARCHED FAN SWITCH BUT NEED HELP PLEASE

honestly i wouldnt bet a dime on hypertech anything (mainly from my stay in the mustang world), much less my engine. for t-stat, go stant. they have never failed me and i have never heard a bad thing about them.

you could also tie the fan into the accessory switch somehow, then it wouldnt be a constant on, and you wouldnt have to worry about forgetting it, as the power would be cut when you pulled out the key.

another thing is i dont have much faith in factory guages/sending units. i would at least go for an aftermarket temp gauge, but as you said you couldnt even touch the hoses and they seemed way too hot, so i dont know about that for sure.

If you run a switch from the green wire with the white stripe on the fan relay to a switch and then from the switch to ground, you can turn the fan on manually. If you forget to shut the fan off, so what, it shuts off with the ignition.

Re: I SEARCHED FAN SWITCH BUT NEED HELP PLEASE

my question is can i just change to a 180 stant t stat or do i need to run a stant 180 t stat and a lower temp fan switch. i've had my t stat out three times now and it is a pain to keep draining the coolant, i would like to do it right the first time and i would rather install a fan switch than run a toggle to it.let me know thanks

I was having the same problem. I did not change anything but the fan switch. I used a Hypertech product 180* I think. Have no problems. As has been said, gauges are not always accurate, but sounds like yours is. Mine was also, once I put the switch in, stays about 180, fan switches on as normal.

Re: I SEARCHED FAN SWITCH BUT NEED HELP PLEASE

From what I found on the faq board topic(can I go a 160 t stat on my 305tpi). This sounds to me like what I,m looking for. Can I run my new 195 degree stant t stat and a lower temp fan switch like the hypertech 4028 or the jet performance 60600 or the grand national switch. Do I have to switch my stat or can I leave it and go with one of these fan switches to keep me around 200 degrees. If so which fan switch is the best way to go

Better way ,
Connect the new fan switch in the head to the existing fan control wire (green ) to computer.Leave stock wire in place.
The switch will turn the fan on automatically but if it fails the computer will still turn fan at the stock setting.
Don't have to remember to turn on / off manually.

thats the way to go right there. good thinking vettoz.

whatever you choose to do, i would just make sure that you can control the fan. i just like to know that (in my cars) if it starts getting a little bit too hot early on, i can just flip it.

i still liked mine that was switched to a constant on though because i could leave the fan on after i was done driving, to prevent heat sink or something (especially since i live in florida) and when i did that my 87 would start up alot easier after it was hot.

Good idea. He can still also add a manual switch by doing a three way splice. Ultimate fan control
