Just did #2 ,,I sharpened and elongated the leading edge on the valve guide. I really need a 4" mandrel for the intake side( exhaust I didnt) does anybody know where to get a porting mandrel from; where I will pay actuall shipping, not a $12 "handling fee" on a $9 part that costs $5 to ship. Anyway enough complaining heres the second port I did..

in the fifth picture it looks like the bump on the roof of the port is still there. also it looks like you left the floors and roofs very rough especially in the first picture you can see it a lot. id smooth that out and take any of those bumps out completely. some other members here might suggest shortening the guide but wait for them to chime in thats the one thing i never did because i wasnt a fan of it. i did a set of 601s myself you should like the end results.

Is this your first set? Little rough like previously said but you're on the right track

A good book on the subject is David Vizard's on the subject of modifying SBC cylinder heads, still available on amazon. A little dated but the principles are sound.

Re: ported intake on 601 head, look, is it ok or need some tweaking?

I cant get in more than an 1 1/2" or so,, to smooth everything out without a longer mandrel. Im holding off hoping to find a vendor besides summit or jegs,,, I really hate the minimum $12 handling fee regardless what you order. Yes this is my first Head Ive ever ported, I finished the exhaust ports and thought the intake would be less time consuming since no polishing is needed...WRONG ..... Im lovin it and once I get a longer mandrel the results should be alot better.. You can tell on my exhaust ports which was my first and last..lol. Anymore insight please

Re: ported intake on 601 head, look, is it ok or need some tweaking?

you can get 3" or 6" mandrels.
go to carbidebur.com and buy them. I've dealt with them a few times, they're good. internet seller, so it's not actually carbidebur.com on the credit card statement (multiple sellers) but they are not fly by night or anything...

I like the #2 better than #1. #1 still needs material removed "behind" the valve guide. Like #2.
Cut them a bit shorter too. Make it smaller IMHO.
You're doing good though.

Get some devcon epoxy to fill the rocker stud void there.

oh, sorry wanabe, didn't understand your question.
I bought a 6" long sanding mandrel from mcmastercarr.com
fastest shipping on planet earth (next to digikey) from USA to Canada.
let me know if you can't find it.

carve the bowls out more so it is a straight shot down from the ramp with no interference

so the air slides through like butter on a hotplate
