I searched but couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I just bought a new starter for my new motor. I can't remember where my wires go. I've got one big black one from batter, 1 terminal with 2 red (maybe orange) wires hooked to it, 1 terminal with 1 red (maybe orange again), and 1 purple wire.

I've got the big stud, which I'm assuming is the 3 red (or orange) wires and the battery wire, and the purple one needs to go on the little stud right next to it.

Then does any part of the starter need to have a ground? If so, the solenoid or the starter motor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated since this is the only thing holding me back from firing up my new 350 =). Thanks guys.

Also, do our starters need a shim?

 

Looks like you got it. The double wire powers the interior, and the one big one is the battery, and the purple one is the switched power. The starter grounds itself through the motor/grounds on the block.

 

Ok, so I don't have to have any ground for the starter then right?

I'm pretty sure that's what you're saying.

 

There's no ground wire that goes directly to the starter, but I know I have one on the passenger side head and one on the bracket that holds the alternator. That's just for refference if the starter doesn't want to go, or you develope other electrical problems.

 

Ok, well, I just started it but I had to shut it off because my gauge fuse keeps blowing and I don't know why. And I need my gauges so I can break in the cam.
