383 stroker, stock oil pan...wat oil pump to choose??

building 383 HSR stroker... max RPM 5,500 peak power. i wanted to keep the stock pan etc to save sum $$$.

main questions are... wats the stock pressure of a stock OEM melling oil pump, at idle and driving around... and will it be enough for my 383 that might see minimal track use but rev up there a good bit? im afraid if i get the high volume/high pressure melling pump that i'll suck my pan dry causing major problems in the upper RMP ranges. high volume pumps are 25% more flow than stock.

car will be a daily driver, will prob get on it a good amount around town for sum fun. i was thinkin stock melling pump, stock replacement pickup. with the stock pan. now do i need a new pump shaft? cuz i havent seen any, just the high volume pump shafts at summit.

OHH also i was gona get sum ARP main bolt kit for my 87 2bolt main block.... is it a large or small journal since theres 2 diff kits??? it will be a 3.75" stroke with 5.7" rod scat kit

The oil pressure you'll see from a pump depends on a lot of things besides just the pump. A stock pump will be able to move more than enough oil for your application. There's no point in using a high-volume pump, but they don't "suck the pan dry" if you do. Use a new shaft with it, preferrably one with a metal connecting collar instead of the stock plastic one.

I would go with a Melling M-select pump for peace of mind no need going cheap on something as important as an oil pump. You would be better off with a M55A high pressure pump if your going the stock route. Something like the 10553 std volume or the 10552c 10% higher volume anti cavitation pump, I personally run the 10552c in most of my high performance builds, would be the better choice. Mine is 20psi at idle and about 40-50psi around town and at 5800 its like 65 psi. If you do go with a stock pump (m55, m55a, etc) use the IS-55E shaft with the steel collar, its like $6, also all of the M-select pumps come with a shaft. Hope that helps some. $.02

Also here is a great article on oil pump porting if your interested in it.

The Melling castings are not as good as they were years ago but a M55 is still a very good replacement pump.

You don't need a high pressure pump unless you're using the engine's oiling system to lube something else such as a turbo. It's not actually a high pressure pump but a high volume pump. If you want a slightly higher pressure than normal, install the corvette spring that normally comes with all the Melling pumps.

"I would go with a Melling M-select pump for peace of mind"

Ditto's to that. The last I head Melling will not warranty their standard pumps for a race motor. So another reason to go with the select.

Re: 383 stroker, stock oil pan...wat oil pump to choose??

thanks for the help guys. im on a really tight budget and cars coming apart within the next month or so... so yea i think im goin with the stock m55. the hardened imput shaft says for high pressure pump tho... will that work with the stock flowing m55? i just want 20-30psi at idle and 40-60 psi driving. my stock engine with 137,000 on it only has 10-15psi at idle and 20-25 driving around doesnt matter how high i rev, which scares me.(coming from the stewart warner electric 100psi oil gauge.) so idunno how accurate it is.

also does anyone kno about the journal size for a 87 350 2bolt stock 350 block?? want to get ARP main bolts but i need to kno if its large or small journal?

Re: 383 stroker, stock oil pan...wat oil pump to choose??

Actually the M55A is a standard volume pump with a high pressure spring installed (pink I believe). I agree that high pressure is not always needed, but if he wants higher pressure, then the M55A will give him that without putting any more strain on the motor than the M55 will. The M55HV is a high pressure and high volume pump and tend to heat up the oil a lot more due to the fact that it keeps recirculating the oil through back through the pump instead of through the bearings like its supposed to. Most of the engine builders I deal with at work tend to use high pressure std volume pumps (M55A) for mild performance low budget builds. But on race motors or any hot street/ stroker motor the pump of choice is the M select. Usually a 10552c or 10552, but to be fair I do sell alot of 10550 & 10555 HV pumps just because of the fact that the engine builders customer can't get it through their thick head that a HV pump isn't needed for their application. $.02

The IS-55E melling shaft works with any of the pumps we are discussing. If you are looking for 20-30 idle and 40-60 driving then use the m-55a or the M-select 10552 or 10552c. And you have a large journal engine.
