Normal Operating Oil Pressure for LO3.
Hey guys, so heres my question. i have an 88' T/A with an L03. I just installed some autometer gauges on the a pillar to replace my old stock ones becuase i know they dont read accurate. Well my stock oil pressure gauge at start would read 60+ psi, then slowly fall down as i drove to around 45-50 psi. then when i would go WOT it would go past 60 psi. BUT now with my new autometer oil pressure gauge and the correct oil sending uint installed, the gauges only reads between 25-34psi at crusing speed then maybe goes to 38 at WOT. Is that normal oil pressure or low for my engine? i run 5w30 in the motor so should i consider running a thicker oil? Any advice is great cause i didnt think there would be that much of a difference in the gauge readings.

40 is about the lid on a fully warmed up engine, from the ones I have worked on. It will always be higher when cold, and I'm sure you can figure out why. Idling hot they seem to be fine down to about 15 PSI (20+ is preferred). Any lower and you usually find out the motor is a bit tired and worn out if you tear it down.

Yeah that sounds about normal for an older 305. I had a L03 RS and it had zero psi at idle and about 30max on the highway. I drove the car for 2 years like that and it ran when I junked it. I wouldnt worry about it.

Ok sounds good. I was just curious and from the sounds of it i dont need to work. The engine was rebuilt before i bought it, but they never touched the heads cause they ran out of money which makes me worry about what else did they not touch???? But ok thanks for all the imput!
