gas cap

Ok, well I didn't find anything when I searched, so here..problem is that my gas cap doesn't like to go on easily and then when it does go on, it loosens itself after driving. I replaced the cap a few months ago because it wouldn't go on, but it never loosened itself once I did get it on. Now today after I got gas it wouldn't go back on at all so I put it on and drove the 5 minutes home and there was gas dripping down the side of the car. I messed with it and got it on nice and tight, cleaned off the gas that was on the car, went driving for about 10 minutes and got out and smelt gas. It was down the side again and the cap came off and was just held in by the fuel door. Is there something wrong with the filler neck or what? I don't think I can really put the cap on wrong..

Thanks guys..

Re: gas cap

I've been fighting this problem as long as I've owned my car. What's been working pretty well for me was to spread a heavy coat of two-part epoxy all the way around the ratchet mechanism. This lets me screw the cap on good and tight. The other trick I found was to get a little bit of gas around the very end of the filler neck before screwing on the cap. The liquid lubricates the rubber gasket on the cap and allows me to really tighten it down. This keeps the gas spilling down the side to a minimum, although if I take an exit ramp at high speed just after filling the tank, I still see some leakage. Apart from that, the problem is way less.

Re: gas cap

Thanks for the answer, but I'm looking for something a little more permanent. Anyone else?

Re: gas cap

im thinking it as something to do withthe filer neck. if you know any other thirdgens ask to try you cap on their car if they dont have the same issue, then you can rule out which one it is

Re: gas cap

I was thinking the filler neck too. I only have one friend with a thirdgen and he hasn't touched it in over a year and he's out of town. I can't try that for about another week.
