It just shuts down.
1991 camaro rs convertible, 305 tbi. I have a few bolt on mods but nothing internal added.
The good part.... starts everytime
The bad part..... shuts down for no apparant reason.
I will start the car, and its fine for a few seconds then just shuts down like you turned the key off. Re starts with no problem, no sputtering, no nothing, but then it shuts right down again. restarts..same thing. This can go on for anywhere between 3-10 times before it stays running. There is not a miss in the motor, no smoke, and all seems perfect but it just shuts down, and its driving me nuts. I checked the fuel pump..no problem there. Sending unit is new, no problem there. Fuel pattern from the injectors is nice, and constant.
New coil is putting out plenty of power, new distributor, cap rotor, plugs and wires. New fuel pump relay, and fuseblock. I have no idea where else to look but at the ecu. Any ideas here? The car runs like a top, fast, and plenty of power. This shutting down is very annoying, and a bit embarassing when im sitting at a lite and it decides to take a dump. Oh, one thing i did add if it makes a difference... double row adjustable timing gear set..set to 3* advance. Maybe the ecu cant figure it out????
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ignition module?
Or the oil pressure sending unit, its part of the fuel pump circuit. It will shut off the engine if it doesnt detect oil pressure. If its failing it will cause that problem.

According to "Final Word on Oil Pressure Sensor" last posted in yesterday, the sensor is only a backup to the fuel pump relay and will not shut the engine down if the oil pressure drops to 0.
100% fact? I'm going to disconnect my sensor when the car's running to find out.

Re: It just shuts down.
I can check the sensor easy enough, but its showing good oil pressure at the gauge. I think if it were the ignition module it wouldnt even crank at times. This is a tough one to figure out because it happens randonly. Anyone who looks at it wonders if im nuts because it seems to run so good. Its like something is just shutting down the spark.
Re: It just shuts down.
I would suggest changing the ignition module if for no other reason than to include it in the list of 'things I replaced'. If you change that out then you can state 'It cannot be the ignition module'. At least that is 'something' you can try right now. If your problems go away then it will most likely be because of this 'one' change. I think the ignition module is relatively inexpensive and if it does the trick you would wish you would have changed it a long time ago ! If it does not change anything then at least you will have a spare ignition module !
