Starter Problem???

I bought my car about a week ago sight on see, never started it, bird was in nice shape. I thought just battery, charged it and turned the key, all the acessories came on, but when I go to turn the car over there is a loud hmming coming from the engine. Do I need a new starter? The car doesn't even attempt to turn over, just humms
i don't think the engine is siezed because I can turn it at the crank.
Thank you in advance!!!!

Re: Starter Problem???

did your battery pass a load test? I had one that would run the headlights, radio, windows and all that good junk, but would fail at the thought of starting up.. humming or ticking?

Re: Starter Problem???

Not sure what you meant by load test, it hums, the battery wasn't fully charged so we had a battery charger on the jump start mode, when you turned the key you hear a loud humming coming from the engine compartment

Re: Starter Problem???

well, the load would be the starter. if there's a bad cell or something then the battery can still work for the small stuff, but still lacks the necessary ***** to get the job done.

Re: Starter Problem???

Take your battery to the local auto store and have it tested to see if it passes.

And just some advice, if the battery is a duralast (Auto Zone) take it to Advance Auto. I've had instances where Auto Zone has told me the battery is good but in reality it's junk!

Re: Starter Problem???

Was reading that some of these cars have a chip in the key or something, My car you don't need the key to turn the ignition, would this also cause a problem?

Re: Starter Problem???

Tried to boost it tonight, let battery charge a bit, and then when go to turn over nothing, and the lights(had the headlights up) would turn off when I turn the key to start,

I would like to know what has to be replaced so I can get the parts,
So far I've heard battery and starter, what else could it be?
Going to pick up starter tomorrow

Re: Starter Problem???

did you check the battery cables? is there power getting to the starter? Often it's the easy stuff that gets you. check with a multimeter to see if you're getting voltage to the starter wires. you'll have to do that with the ignition on. or you could check the ohms with the power off. if the voltage reading is too low, it won't get the starter moving. if there's too much resistance in the wire, not enough of the voltage (say, from a perfectly good battery) will make it to the starter. I would really stress testing that before you went out and bought a new starter and battery.

Re: Starter Problem???

I don't have one of those but I'll try to borrow one. Could my engine be seized? I tried to turn the crank by the nut on it and it just loosens or tightens it. I haven't heard my car run before.
Oh and I cleaned up the grounds and still nothing

Re: Starter Problem???

Well, you can get a multimeter from most auto shops for pretty cheap. You would put it on dc volts and look for power coming to the starter cable when the ignition is in the on position. It's pretty soon to thing it would have seized up don't you think? Would be a shame to go through all that work over something that didn't get looked over that was as easy as faulty wiring, don't you agree?

Re: Starter Problem???

I can't turn the crank. I put a socket on the crank and when I push on the breaker bar it just tightens it but its not turning at all, like I'm scared the bolts gonna break
