old idle/stalling problem after headers
I recently had the pace setter headers put on my car and now I am having a problem i thought i had got rid of because i had my dieing alternator replaced. i haven't had this problem for a few months now since the alternator was replaced but now its seems to be back. what happens is that when I'm driving along and my foot is on the gas any amount the car is fine. if i have to brake or let off the gas for a period of time that car will die. its like the car just wont hold the engine at the correct idle. when i go to start the car it starts just fine but then dips down low on the revs then revs up to about 1500 and slowly comes down. it does all that by its self. the only thing that i know is wrong with the car is i need a new EGR. but apparently its been like that for a while so i don't think that the problem. also some time when its cold out it doesn't like to start. it turns over but deosnt fire up right away. normal its like the car doesn't crank much at all i just turn the key and and its instantly on. if the car has been running and its cold i can shut it down and start it right back up.
P.S. does relearning idle have anything to do with this because saw some talk about that on other post while i was searching

Re: old idle/stalling problem after headers
i just took the car for a quick spin and notice some more symptom
1 the car hasn't stalled in park and i couldn't make it stall when i tried
2 when it is idling it hovers around at 550 in a back and forth way
3 when i was heading up my street and on to the high way it seem like i had more power than i usually have (its not the headers i know what it feels like with them on) and when i stopped and turned around i stalled out (started right back up like always) and on the return trip the car seemed to have less power than usual

Re: old idle/stalling problem after headers
now i am almost convinced that is my EGR because i was reading through the Haynes manual and i think my EGR is stuck in the position that diverts exhaust into the intake so thats why its stalling. but i still would like to have the opinion of some people with more third gen experience then me.

Assuming this is a Third Generation 82 - 92 Camaro or Firebird and you put headers on it.
Based on the 3.1L I would assume its around 90-92.
If so, it would have had an oxygen sensor and sometimes headers don't a location for one.
Or when people replace them, the tip gets dirt and grease on them and does not work correctly after that.
In short, if you took off an oxygen sensor, then that might be your issue right there.
Let us know either way.

Re: old idle/stalling problem after headers
i would start with the egr-ive had problems in the past with idle/stalling from a stuck egr. its a pretty quick/easy check, first i would pull off the vacuum line connecting to the top of the egr valve, just to be sure the vacuum solenoid isnt applying vacuum incorrectly-if you pull this line off at idle and it has vacuum, you have a solenoid or wiring problem. if this is not the case, unbolt the egr valve itself, and remove it for inspection. if you have a vacuum pump you can apply vacuum to the valve and look for proper operation (opening and more importantly closing), and also inspect the valve for carbon buildup that is keeping it from closing. what i like to do is run the car without the valve and cover the port with my hand or a shop rag. if your idle improves, your egr valve is probably at fault.

Re: old idle/stalling problem after headers
so now the problem seem to be slowly fixing it self because its starts right up even in the cold and it hasn't stalled again
