1986 TPI Serpentine problems

* I have a 1986 Camaro TPI 305 V8 (L98). The previous owner altered the A/C compressor in order to install an after market headers. But, now when the car is idling or at a stop light the compressor vibrates (excessively).

Is there any serpentine bracket that I can purchase to eliminate the compressor vibration?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TGO. I assume yours is a one-belt serp system. If so, perhaps you only need the brace and spacer (the latter used with headers):

Just ran across this:

If you've got an 86, it's v-belt. Tighten that sucker up!

Also, 305 == L05; 350 == L98.

Lastly, it's pretty hard to tell what you need without some pictures of how he "modified" the compressor.

Thanks James C and The Scary One for answering my post!

My motor is using a V belt setup not a single belt.

As soon as I get home this evening I will take photos and post them to see if you will be able to help me.

Only partly. The alternator is run by a flat multi-groove belt that goes over the water pump as well. The others are V-belt.

Actually, both the LO5 and L98 are 350's. The LO3 ('88-'92) is a 305. The 305 TPI ('85-'92) is the LB9. The LO5 was not offered in f-bodies.

Ah. You got me on the engine names. But only the 87 had the half bastard Serpentine/V-belt nightmare. Ask me how I know. :P Do you know how annoying it is having to buy an alternator that only fits three cars? :S

Well, I'd ask how you know, but what you know is wrong. Both '86 and '87 had the flat multi-groove belt for the alternator.

I know about '86 because my V8 donor car was '86. I know about '87 because I bought a complete '87 LB9. '85 I've only heard about. Oh, also know '82 was all v-belts.

Re: 1986 TPI Serpentine problems

Really? From what I remember of my parts manual CD it said that the serpentine specific parts numbers were only for 87 models. Then again, my 87 Shop Manual does tell me that there is no 350 for 87, and only lists the LB9 as the TPI engine. :/

It does figure that GM would start putting that stuff on as soon as it came out, and I just checked partsamerica.com, and it says you might have to use a serp or a v-belt. Probably just started slapping them on cars when they ran out of parts. Thank you for the knowledge!

I'd prefer calling the '86/'87 "flat multi-groove" because it doesn't "serpentine" around anything.

Re: 1986 TPI Serpentine problems

Just remember that in order to use the braces, you are going to have to make new studs for the headers with spacers for the braces. You will need to make 3. One is the shortest at about 1", then the other 2 are 1-5/8" I think. I made some out of the stock studs with pieces of pipe as spacers but now that I dropped the new engine in, they are going to be made from stainless. I'll make up some drawings and post them up if you want so you could just take them into a machine shop and have them made. Shouldn't take them more than an hour to make and it would use very little materials.
