Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Vortecs are a decent choice for a mild performance engine. While the valve travel would most likely be okay for .470" lift, new valve springs should be assumed.

About the best deal out there is the sdparts upgraded Vortec head kit - includes ready-to-go heads that have been upgraded for more lift and better springs, intake manifold, gaskets & bolts. http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...RPMAirGap.aspx A screaming deal. The RPM intake requires a squarebore carburetor. If you want to use a spreadbore carb, you'll have to use the lower-powerband Performer intake http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...merIntake.aspx .
