89 RS TIMING DEGREE?

im tryin to time my 89 camaro rs. i looked up online it should be at 4 degrees at flat sea level. well thats where i am, i put the line on the first 4 or postive and my motor dies out. am i doing sumthing wrong? i used the timing light, i just cant find the right spot on the number plaque to get my motor running right.

help?

Are you disconnecting the connector by the distributor? I think its the EST connector. Been 20 years since I've done it. If you don't, the timing will be WAY off.
