cam button?
cam button?
hey guys need some advice. i have a 89 roller block that i am putting a non roller hdy flat tappet cam in. the cam seems too short, do i just need a cam button to make it work?
Re: cam button?
the edge of the new cam is flush with the block and if i put the retainer on it i can no bolt on the timing gear. the roller cam looks like it has an piece that comes out from the end of the cam that the flat tappet does not. am i missing somthing?

You just pushed the cam a little too far back, that's all. There a little space behind the back cam journal and the plug in the back of the block. The cam timing gear is what locates the cam in the block. Put a bolt in and pull it out slightly, remove the bolt and install the cam gear.

The cam is supposed to be flush with the block, and you don't use the retainer with it.

I guess I read too fast. I thought you were saying you can't get the cam timing gear bolts to reach with the cam gear bolt retainer on.
Right, leave the roller cam retainer plate off.
