Car will not start. Help!

OKAY...first off the started ia a pain in the *** to get out. With that off my chest here I go:
Walked out to the 85 IROC last weeknd and it simply would not turn over. The starter makes ZERO noise.....arg. Have not had any problems prior to this with the starter....Soo I took the starter out and to advance auto and it works fine. Somewhere I read on here that the fuseable links could be bad but my headlights and all accessories work fine. (according to Vader, this is how one would go about eliminationg the fusable links.)Connections seem to all be solid, I took them apart and sanded them then tightened them back. The starter IS getting juice b/c I tested it at the starter. So what is the problem: I have read about a "bad park nuetral lock out/reverse light indicator switch" on automatics such as mine, but have no idea where they are located or how to replace/test them. OR could it be the switch in the steering column? How do you test/replace that? ANY OTHER IDEAS? Thanks in advance.....let's hear some opinions---

What led up to it not running?

The park / neutral switch is under the center console, located at the base of the gear selector. Push the button down and push the gear selector all the way forward toward the park position. Yes, it has to be in park to start.

Good luck.

Re: Car will not start. Help!

I hear you on the starter being a pain to get out. i took mine off this weekend and almost had it drop on my head, not to mention i almost had to take the down pipe off. but mine was doing to same thing, my head lights worked, along with my accessories too. but i think my problem is just the starter, yours seems more difficult. my motor is carburated and has less eletrical things to deal will. good luck

If your's is new enough to have that GM security key there is a relay behind the driver side kick panel. Mine was shoved in a hole and covered by a gooey tar like material. This is what sends the power to the park/neutral switch if I remember correctly. If you aren't getting power to your park/neutral switch I would check that relay.

Re: Car will not start. Help!

nothing led up to it not running......the car has been running great until last weeknd...weird.

OLDCelica: I do not know about whether the 85 IROC i own has the GM security key...I will check behind the driver's kick panel and see if I see a relay.
