New starter problems
New starter problems
i know you guys probably get this often but i have a problem. Before my starter crapped out it had hot start problems. I bought a new battery and a new starter. the cars been sitting for a year with out moving and when i put both the new battery and starter i only hear a clicking noise kinda like chattering. I have no clue what to do. I dont have the alarm that came with it hooked up but i don't think that has anything to do with it. any suggestions i have checked all termials and everything is tight and clean there was 2 big bolts and alittle one. i put all the red ones on the one of the big bolts and the purple looking one on the small one? i would love to have this camaro running again. oh it's a 91 rs 205 tbi

Try tightening the bolts that connect the power/ground cables to the battery some more.

Re: New starter problems
You might need new cables I had the same problem and it was the cables. First make sure everything is tight try bench testing the starter. One time I bought a new starter that didn't work I bench test every starter I get before I put it in.
Re: New starter problems
bench test? like jumping it? if thats right what it is, the starter gear should push out and spin right? also whats the chatter noise/ hard clicking? also i would like to fix the fact that it is a 305 not a 205 what ever that would be
Re: New starter problems
I would put new cables on, then try it.
If that dosen't work try a new starter.
I bought one for my Silverado, old one tested good, bought one anyway. Started fine for about 3 days. Took that one back, tested good, made them give me one anyway, has been fine sense.
You got the idea with bench testing. You can take it to a parts store and they will do it for you.
It is a 305 cubic inch engine, or 5 liter engine.

Re: New starter problems
So I bench starter it. I was very confused. I made a drawing. I used 3 as my neg. and 1 as my pos. nothing happened. I then used 2 as my neg. and 3 as my positive. and i think it rather spun but didn't engage or it engaged and didn't spin. and then i tried 3 as my negitive. and 1&2 as my positive and it engaged and spun. is this correct? and if so how should these wires be hooked up to the solenoid?
