Start then Stall

All of a sudden my car just got a problem where it will start right up and then it will die. You can give it gas to keep it going, but once you let off the gas it will instantly die. What could be causing this? I unplugged the MAF sensor but that didnt change anything.

Re: Start then Stall

i had a nova that did the same thing. every time i drove it i had to stay on the gas at stops or it would die. i do believe the fix was an ignition control module but i could be wrong its been awhile. totally different car and not as many electronic parts (1974) of course but its always a possibility. take it out and see if your local auto parts store could test it. if they can you want to have them test it multiple times since it can work just fine cold but heated up it could be not working like it should. good luck

Re: Start then Stall

Ill give the ignition module a try. Wouldn't it have to be an ignition problem since it instantly shuts off instead of slowly dying out like it would if it was a fuel problem?

Re: Start then Stall

ignition control module deals with spark at the RIGHT time. i was thinking about this on the way to the coast this weekend and just got back. that problem was actually due to my distributor coming loose and the timing changed on me. couldnt hurt to check either one. the problem i had with the ignition control module itself was that the car did not want to start and then it would and die and then back to not wanting to start again. sorry i got that problem confused with another. no where close to the smarts of a mechanic just trying to help :-) again good luck

Re: Start then Stall

Thanks for your help. I changed the ignition module, then reset the timing, and now its running again.

Re: Start then Stall

Thanks for posting check out my posts sounds like my module also just a little different maybe not TPS switch I was always under the impression that module was go or no go but your post kinda rules that out.
