Zero Decked and Push rods

I had my block zero decked, with stock push rod lengths of 7.800 my engine (350) eats them up. I hardly over tightened them, got to zero lash and put about 1/4 a turn on each.

advice? Anyone run into this before?

I was thinking smaller push rods, but wouldn't that reduce the maximum openness of the valves?

What do you mean by "eats them up"? Did you measure for the correct length?
