Re: how to build engine for dummies?

i would start on a stock rebuild and nothing that will cost you lots of money cuz you dont wanna have to do it again.

i just paid a shop 2500$ to build and dyno me a blown 489 stroker.

There is a book called how to build a small block chevy.
It will give you tip on how to do anything with a low budget of no more than $4000 and have a motor that wil make over 600 HP.

The most complex thing about building a motor, is clearances, tolerances of bearings and the parts you use. If you have the parts situated and they wil handle the power you want to make then your golden. I myslef have my machine shop get the block ready, as far as machining and what not goes, installing bearings etc. Then I put the motor together myself. Its not hard. You just have to make sure you have all the correct torque specs and sequences of how to tighten everything down so its right.

But not both at the same time.

building an engine is one thing, having it last is another. My best advice, dont be afraid to ask questions, and do as much research as you possibly can. Building a SBC or BBC are one of the easyiest engines to build.

Re: how to build engine for dummies?

There is more info on this site than you will ever need. I built my 385 entirely from searching this site and posting questions. I have run into a few hiccups but TGO came through again and my baby is running nicely now.

Re: how to build engine for dummies?

Estimate you'll spend around $600 or so on engine components including pistons, bearings, rings, gaskets + seals, new cam, timing set.

If you're going to try a first-time rebuild without a manual and precision tools, there's an easier way to accomplish the same outcome...

...just take a match and burn the $600 cash.

Re: how to build engine for dummies?

David Vizards "how to rebuild the SBC" is a great book.
He also has a few hotrod books. Somewhat dated, but the principals are solid... you don't get HP from red plug wires, but from cylinder head flow etc. Good info. "how to hotrod the SBC" is his other really good book IMHO. Lots of good pictures and whatnot. ie how to put your piston rings in right side up... make sure you put in the plug below the #5 main cap, how to put in your freeze plugs so they don't leak, etc etc.

Re: how to build engine for dummies?

Search online for books by David Vizard. He has written several books on rebuilding/building up SBC's. I can't remember the exact name of the one I have, but its very thorough for a basic rebuild. Lots of pics so you know what he's talking about. I picked mine up on Ebay for about $30 with shipping.

EDIT: Sonix beat me to it. Damn you!!!
