Removing Fuel Sending Unit. Help needed?
My gas gauge is completely to the right (way past the Full on the gas gauge). I am going to change the fuel sending unit.
I have a 85 Chevy Camaro (6 cyl) and I have started the process of trying to drop the fuel tank.
(I didn't want to cut a hole in the sheet metal and come in from the top.)
Here's what I have done.
1. Removed the lower shock bolts and disconnected the shocks.
2. Removed the exhausted hanges on the driver's side and disconnected the ex hanger from the passenger side.
3. Removed 2 heat shields located right beneath the gas tank.
4. Removed the bolts to the 2 gas tanks straps.
5. Unplug the electrical connectors located on the underbody of the car that connects to the gas tank.
6. I also disconnected some fuel hoses.
I still seem not to have enough clearance. To lower the tank (which is probably a little less than half full).
I noticed that there is a bar that runs accross the axle (the loose exhaust is sitting on it as well as the gas tank straps). It looks like a stablizer bar. The heads of the bolts are 13/16 inch the nuts are slight smaller (I was thinking 3/4, but when I try with the wrench it moves around a bit). Since these bolts have not been removed in some time. I was worried about stripping the nut.
1. Does any boby know the size of the nut on the rear stabilizer bar? Is it metric?
2. Do I need to remove anything else to get the gas tank out?

It's probably a little late now, but did you short the sender wire to ground to make sure it was the sender? It should go to empty. Also check the ground under the driver's side rear seat.

You will have to remove that bar. Probably disconnect your exhaust from the cat.
I would go with jv9999's suggestion before going any further. This gas tank is a big pain to mess with. Especially if it is half full. I would siphon some of that gas out personally before dropping the tank.

Re: Removing Fuel Sending Unit. Help needed?
I was able to drop the tank, though and change the sending unit. Unfortunately the tank was a little more than half full and it was slightly misaligned when I put it back (shifted like 3/4 of inch) and i was not able to get the passenger side tank strap on. I was going to run the tank down to practically empty before realigning the tank with the straps.
I took a test drive around the block and the fuel gauge worked. I shut the car off and then restarted to move it to a different spot. This morning I jumped into the car and it would not go. It would crank and sputter and cut out.
I hear the fuel pump going on when I put the key in the charge position.
Any suggestions? Could it possibly be another problem.
(It worked fine after I tested the sending unit and car)
