power loss

Hope somone here can help an old guy. My '89 RS loses power when slightly accelerating on a slight incline (just before kickdown) and especially with a/c on. Starts and runs perfect otherwise, until engine light comes on. Occurances became more and more frequent until I changed knock sensor, which I thought had remedied this condition for a while, but still occured about 4 times in a 120 mi. round trip. When light comes on, instantly I lose power as if pulling a heavily loaded trailer. I can turn engine off and restarts immediately, and runs fine until nxt occurance. Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. Art

Re: power loss

You need to read the code to see what the error is. It's in the FAQ's. Without the code we'd just be guessing.

Re: power loss

Thanks for the quick reply. Would it do any good to try to read the code when the engine light is not on? The malfunction is much less frequent since the knock sensor replacement, but agravating nun-the-less on a very well kept 98.00 mi. car. Art

The codes are stored for some number of start cycles even after the light goes out.

Re: power loss

i would clear out the codes before you retrieve the codes to eliminate all the old codes and get the newest code, clear em and drive it to make the light come on and then retrieve your code.
