Hesitation!!!!

I have a 91 t/a 305 tpi when i start to excelerate the car feels like it wants to take off but it bogs. It just doesnt feel normal. The engine has 115 thousand miles on it. I put in new plugs, high flow oil, fuel pump and cold air intake on it and i still get the hesitation. Any ideas?

Well, it could be several things, it's hard to say. Does it seem like it's starving for fuel or air? Do you get a check engine light? I would check timing first, make sure it's where it should be, and that the computer is advancing it as it should. It could also be a clogged cat, although that should cause power loss and hesitation across the board, not just off the line.

Re: Hesitation!!!!

i dont the cat on, in pa if i keep it under 5000 a year they dont check for emissions. and it gets plenty of fuel and air. right when i hit the gas and in first and second gear it just bogs. o and no check engine light.

Re: Hesitation!!!!

you driving a stick?? I jsut trying to think of simple things first obviously. I mean if youre just not hitting the gear at the right timing then that could be it completely. What mods are on the car?? If its setup really hot the lowend could be a little slower. Also define what youre talking about if your can. Bog down as it it doesn't react?? its just slow or what??

Re: Hesitation!!!!

no auto. the mods are high flow fuel pump, high flow oil pump, cold air intake and i put a buypass pipe in for the cat. it just doesnt react, when i hit the gas the rpms are fine but the car feels like its getting held back. is it cause i have high miles on the engine?

Re: Hesitation!!!!

Still sounds like it could be a timing issue. Have you ever checked/set timing with a light?

Re: Hesitation!!!!

ok well. Being high mileage there is a chance of things like a break pad partially stuck out and the car has to overcome it or something like that but its fairly unlikely.
personally after saying that id say its the fuel. Just as a lack of fuel hurts and engine too much of it is bad too. IF that high flow is setup is giving to much fuel it'll cause slow acceleration.
It could easily be the opposite too! hows your fuel filter?? being high mileage if its not replaced that could be bogging down your fuel and wasting the money you jsut spent on a new fuel pump!!! Check both those out.

A timing light shoots a strobe light aimed at your car's specific timing marks. The strobe flashes at the same time your #1 cylinder fires, which should mean that the timing mark (usually a line or notch on the flywheel) is lined up perfectly. If everything is timed correctly, you'll see a flashing notch down there. If not, you can adjust the timing until you do.

As for doing it without a light the only way I know is kinda by ear. You play with the dizzy until you get the smoothest, highest idle. And go rev the engine until you get the best response.
