Head question

I plan on doing a little work on my TBI 305 in my 89 T/A and I was wondering if anyone knows what head castings are on this. I have found a set of 187's which I see came on a 305 HO,58cc chambers. I dont want to drop compression if the stock heads have smaller chambers. I plan on putting in some 1.94 intakes & 1.60 exhaust valves in the 187's along with a little port work. I also picked up some Edelbrock headers for $50 and I'm going to instal my LT1 cam I took out of my 97. I want to boost performance without hurting my mpg.

Re: Head question

187 are the stock TBI heads. The HO and TPI came with 416 or 081 castings, both of which are arguably better than the 187 castings.

Re: Head question

I agree with Adam. Add 601's to the list of "better than 187" list. Any of those 3, in my opinion, are a much better platform for P&P work than 187's.

Re: Head question

Hummm, the site I found the info might be incorrect then. I did find it odd that these heads I found came off of a 91 Caprice and they were HO heads. Anyway,I can get them for $25 for the set. With some bigger valves and port work they will still be better than what I am running. I just want alittle more hp and I'm not looking for a real fast car with the 89. Thats what I have my 97 for.

Re: Head question

Pull a valve cover and get the casting number.

That would be $25 poorly spent. I can't imagine what you could be running now that would be worse than those heads, unless they're 70's 350 truck heads with huge chambers and 1.72" intake valves.

Re: Head question

I've had the 350 version of the swirl-port heads on the flowbench, they don't respond to porting.
