im building up a vortec 355 and was wondering if yall think the following parts will give me a good 370hp.

062 3 angle valve job vortec heads
lunati 262 voodoo cam: 219/227 .465/.489 112lsa
10 to 1 compression
RPM air gap manifold
600cfm edelbrock carb

the motor is going into a 71 nova with a 700r4 and 3.08 gears. also what would you expect my 1/4 mile times to be. thanks

 

Wheel hp? I dont think so... Crank HP? Dont think so either.

Maybe low 14's? Need alot more info man. Get 3.73's at minimum if your trying to get lower quarter miles times.

If you do go the Vortec route, it is mentioned in the nice link posted above, but to restate it, make sure you have your guide bosses in the heads milled for more clearance. Anything above about .460" and that's bad juju on factory bosses, with factory installed heights.

What year block is this going in?

 

I'd stop at 9.5:1. Other than that, this combo should get up to 25 mpg if you take it easy.

 

i already have the heads machined for more lift with z28 springs and for screw in studs with guid plates. the first gear in the 700r4 is lower than a th350 so id be like running 3.55 gears with a th350 thats why i have 3.08's.i saw a vortec in a jegs magazine with a lazy 212/222 .435/.460 cam make 330hp and i figured my voodoo 219/227 .465/.489 will make a honest 370hp with headers and rpm intake. if not how much power do yall think i will be puttin out on the motor not at the wheels. my car only wieghs 3500 pounds with me in it so i dont need that much of gear any ways.

 

Earlier combo. Stock Vortec. 218*/.458" single pattern hyd.flat cam. RPM Air Gap. 600 Holley. Shorty headers w/ 3" cat back. 700R4 w/ 3000 stall, 3.70 BW Posi, 26" drag radials. 3650 lbs w/ driver. 13.4 @ 104 w/ 1.8x 60'.
New combo. XR276HR w/1.6 rockers. 12.9 @ 107 w/ 1.7x 60'.
300 rwhp with the first combo.
330 rwhp with the 2nd.

 

thats great! im eventually goin to get a lock up 2500 stall converter so when i get that i should be runnin mid 13's. do you think these vortec heads will let my engine rev good to 6000rpm's?

 

Vortecs on a 350, 6000 is about where you want to be at the end of the quarter mile, if the cam isn't too small.

 

the cam is a 262 voodoo 219/227 .465/.489 112lsa. i figured id be shiftin around 5700 to 6000.

 

I'd bet serious cash you'd run quicker holding first to 6200.

 

alright now i have the engine in the car and it runs good but when it gets hot it starts clicking real bad like the rocker arms are loose so we adjusted them and it still does it. i think i might be because its running close to 10 to 1 compression and it has 87 octane in it right now, but it doesent sound like detonation to me? could the lifters be bad? also i have my T.V cable on the 700r4 were its pulled all the way out at WOT cause thats what a transmission shop told me to do and it shifts real slow and soft and im wondering how do i adjust it to make it shift firmer? oh my base timing is only 8 degrees too.

 

A larger cam bleeds off cylinder pressure, allowing you to run more compression. Check your plugs, and try premium with octane boost.... I bet if you do both it will run a lot better.

 

i put 93 octane in her and she still ticks, she runs real good but that damn ticking gets to me. i still think it has a bad lifter or two? iv never heard what a bad lifter sounds like but thats the only thing i can think of.

 

Ticking is hard to diagnose in a forum like this.
I'll mention a possible header or manifold leak only because nobody else has. Leakage there can sound like valvetrain noise.

 

well i was driving to school today and when the engine got warm the ticking turned into a knock so my brother towed me home and now im in the process of takin the oil pan off and re torquing the rod caps. i think that led to low oil pressure to the lifters which made it seem like a valvetrain problem.

 

That's what I was thinking as I read this, but re-torquing the caps is probably not the answer. Pull them out and inspect the bearings.

 

yea i am. im pretty sure that they are ok bacause we put brand new ones in and this is only the second day running the motor but ima check just in case.

 

well when i went to torque the rod bolts they were all fine. also when i was driving home with a limp, all of a sudden the engine started to run real rough and thats because i found out when i took the valve cover off that the #7 exhaust rocker stud broke. so this leads me to bieleve that it is bad lifters. it gets a steady 60psi of oil. what do yall think it is?
