In line fuel pump with stock in tank in place?

Hey guys, just curious if anyone has installed an in-line fuel pump in a tbi or tpi car using the existing lines and pump in place. The in-tank pump works, if that matters.

Swapping a modded 350 TBI that will require more fuel, I have so much work ahead of me I'm hoping I don't have to drop an axle out of her too.

Also, I noticed when looking through stock replacement fuel pumps that a 454 tbi truck has the same part number as a 305 and 350 through autozone. Mine is a newer one, last owner said he did it recently, and not sure where it's from, but I did notice many napa parts installed, so i'm assuming it's their stock replacement.

If you need more fuel the in tank pump is going to be restrictive.
people do that when the intank dies, and for some it works, but most of the time, it won't have enough to pull past the dead pump.
So in short, it may work but your better off taking the intank out.
You could put an access door in so you don't have to drop the tank.

that's kind of what i figured, was hoping that somehow it would work. Guess wishful thinking doesn't over-rule the laws of physics huh?

I don't even want to start the whole fuel pump access hatch debacle here. I'm not sure I would do that to my car... but whatever you do to your car is your own business. Worst case scenario with that hatch cut out is I lose some rigidity. Darn, guess I should put the 8pt cage in to stiffen it up

an in line external fuel pump can be an addition to the stock intank pump for performance applications. My s/c vehicle uses the stock intank with performance external pump. That setup came from procharger. If the stock in tank pump is on its way out there is no good way to get around that. you wil have to replace it. There are some options for performance in tank pumps so you dont have to add an external pump depending on your application and HP needs. I would not recomend a "fuel pump access door". Just drop the axle, its not that bad.

Well my stock pump is just fine (knock on wood) but I'm just going to need to pump some serious fuel to the 350 i'm putting in her. Could you give me more details on your setup? I was thinking maybe if the two worked in conjunction with one another.... would love more info on that.

Well, i dont have specifics (brand etc) but i can get them (im at work). The pump and relay came in the procharger kit with the supercharger. I was purusing summit the other day and they do have an inline pump that is similar in nature. It is mounted up near the fuel filter just before it. I believe ATI may sell it and vortech may also have a version of it. i believe its a 255 lph pump. hope this helps.

absolutely helps. if it feeds an SC engine it should do just fine with my 300-350 hp TBI motor. I'll look into the procharger kit, they should have a parts list on there I can gander at.

Re: In line fuel pump with stock in tank in place?

good to here, make sure you run a good fuel pressure regulator as well. My fuel pump configuration supplies enough for a well built 383 with 14lbs boost, so using the same on a 350 hp setup will need to be regulated properly.

To be honest you will probably be okay with the stock pump in there. The stock pump is utilized for higher hp apps than the 305 as you mentioned before. Not a problem going bigger, its easier to limit a big pump than wish for a smaller one to pump more. But i think youd be okay with the stocker really.

Re: In line fuel pump with stock in tank in place?

See thats what I thought too, but on here people suggest a better fuel pump after the ultimate TBI mods, let alone heads/cam/intake/headers/bored TBI unit/cowl induction. But I figured if you go by hp numbers if it'll feed a 454 it'll feed my slightly over mild TBI 350. It'll be my first time tuning too so I just don't want to screw myself not pumping enough fuel and complicate things more.

If it were me i would get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (youll need one anyway) and do your mods. If you run lean afterwards then consider the xternal pump or a performance intank pump.
