difficult to change spark plugs and wires?

is it hard to change the plugs and wires on a 1990 camaro v8 305 tbi? i know how to do it, i was just wondering if clearance is a problem? would i have to take things off the engine? it doesn't look like i have to on the driver's side of the engine, but the passenger side of the engine looks more crowded.

It's tight, but you don't really have to remove anything to do it (except the plug wire from the plug). With the proper plug socket, extensions, flex ratchet, etc., it's doable.

I've heard 4thgens and up are a real bear. A friend took his '95 to the dealer for a tune up, boy was he pissed and that's putting it mildly - bill was $1000; only thing changed was plugs. Didn't surprise me when he sold it.

Some will be better reached from below, rather than from above.

Re: difficult to change spark plugs and wires?

I was able to change all my plugs from above on my carbed '85 w/ A/C with just a 3/8 ratchet and a spark plug socket. The most difficult is the pass. side rear plug.

alright, thanks guys, yeah, 4th gens are horrible to replace, if you have headers on there too it's impossible to do with normal tools without taking the water pump and the accessory pulleys off

Not really. Most of the plugs can be got from the bottom with the starter removed. Routing the wires back through the origianl routes can be the worst part but you dont really have to remove alot to do that if you know a few cheats

Re: difficult to change spark plugs and wires?

Got them all off on my 89 RS 305 from the top. With shorty headers.
Just remeber that you can get to them from the bottom too.
Also if you are having trouble with getting a ratched in, if you can fit a wrench, a 3/4 will fit on a spark plug socket.

Re: difficult to change spark plugs and wires?

Take it from a new guy like myself,, After I went in the house with blood dripping everywhere,, I figured the best way to get to the hard to reach ones was to jack it up and go in from the bottom,, very easy that way!!!!

Going in from the top will scar you for life!

woo hoo

Re: difficult to change spark plugs and wires?

Just did mine today on my LB9. I got six of them from the top. The last two on the passenger side I had to get from the bottom. The air tubes on the exhaust manifolds are the biggest pain in the behind as far as getting my hands in there was concerned.
