I have an 89 rs. Over the past few weeks when i try to start the car it just clicks when i turn the key. The third or forth time i turn the key it starts right up. Today it clicked twice and nothing since. I have power to everything just no click or start. i am pretty sure it is the starter but just want to double check. i am recovering from back surgery and would hate to replace it if that might not be the problem.

also can anyone recomend a good quality started

Tap the starter motor casing with something while someone holds the key in the "start" position (or, protect your back, and you start the car while a buddy taps the starter). If it starts after tapping - bad starter.

If it is time for a new starter, look into the smaller gear reduction starters. I am a fan of CVR and Tilton, personally. Haven't used any others, but I am sure others work equally as well.

 

going to install the new one today. any tips i should know?

 

Remove the negative battery terminal before you do anything else.

Re-connect after you're done replacing the starter.
