Stock Firebird air intakes

hey all, I can't find an answer to this anywhere on the site or elsewhere. We have an '87 GTA that we are running the Camaro Mustang Challenge series. This series dictates that we use stock componentry. There's one problem: our GTA already had a CAI on it which will not be legal for Nationals in '09. Our engine guy runs 3rd Gen Camaros and said we should have the same intake as his 89 Camaro, but I've seen some pics that lead me to believe many Firebirds had different intakes to the system.

Did any 3rd gen 'birds come with alternative air intakes, say off towards the front right of the engine compartment? TPIS's book has some pics of modded Firebird filter housings which look like they go down there (versus clamping over the radiator).

Thanks!

i believe this is the only intake for the TPI cars, the camaro style wont work because the hood slopes down too much at the radiator support and the duct wont fit

Re: Stock Firebird air intakes

My 86 TransAm is different from the picture. At the engine, I had a bellows hooking to a plastic air box. The box was one piece about 3x3x15 long. It ran towards the right (passenger side) and went under the radiator overflow hose. The MAF hooked to it, then into the air filter canister. The canister has a square lid with a 1 inch opening across the front behind the headlight. The air goes down the middle of the filter and is drawn out into the MAF. It is a restrictive setup. Just taking the canister out and sticking the filter on the end of the MAF is a brig improvement.

Re: Stock Firebird air intakes

you want an 88-90 air intake box, like the pic //<86TA>\\ posted.

85-87 is more restrictive and will cost a few HP

Re: Stock Firebird air intakes

hey everyone, did any of the Firebirds or Camaros ever have their air intake over on the left side? If they did, we can switch it (and put our oil cooler on the right side for better weight distribution).
