Help on timing
i just put in a 350 carb with the xe268 comp cam.
the only way i can get the car to stay on is by having it advanced 12 to 16 degrees. is this too much? when i get it to around 10 degrees it wants to die it won't stay on long.

Assuming this isn't a computer controlled distributor, no, it isn't.

It's best to set it so the total mechanical timing (vacuum advance disconnected) is about 34-36 degrees BTDC. The timing you have at idle, up to max, and at cruise are adjusted for best characteristics from there - no starter kick-back, smooth idle, no pinging under part-throttle load.
