Car starts, but wont move....
I've got a 1986 pontiac Firebird, automatic 2.4L V6. I'm able to start it up and it sounds great, but unfortunately when I shift it from park to Drive, and give it gas, the engine only revs. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea as to what it possibly could be, if you need anymore information, just post what you need to know, I dont know much about cars, sorry. One thing ive noticed (dont know if it will help or not) is that when it is in park, I cant push it anywhere, I have to move it to neutral or drive to be able to move it, so it seems like its shifting in some ways. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I'd check your fluid level in the transmission check linkages and then if still nothing your transmission is probably burned up the car wont move in park because park locks the drive shaft locking the rear wheels, good luck man

If my transmission is burned up, any ideas how much that would cost to fix? It would break my heart to have to sell this car, but I doubt id be able to afford to fix it. Also, how much do you guys think I'd be able to sell the car for with a burned up transmission?

A standard rebuild on a 700 is anywhere from 500 - 700 bones.

Before writing off the tranny, I'd change the fluid and filter. Then, if it still acts up, I'd decide whether or not to keep it.

But, Check the shifter cable, before I knew much about cars, I had my 91 rs towed home, and after a week or so, we realized the shifter cable end broke, and caused it to slip off of the tranny, Maybe yours came undone a bit and is causing it to not fully engage drive.

Most likely the trans is shot, and there is no point in doing a service...won't help. As for the value, virtually none. 4 banger birds with blown trannies just aren't desired. Sorry to be the barer of bad news... no point in beating around the bush.
