86 TA timing slip

I have an 86 Trans am with a 305 TPI engine with what we think is a timing slip. It will start but wont stay running. It happened when we were putting an alternator on it. He pulled a fuse to check for the turn signal fuse as well. It was running like it never ran before then it just crocked over. What tools and parts would i need to fix the timing slip? what amount of $$ am i looking at here? ballpark

Use a test light and see if your distributor is getting fire the entire time, it may only be getting juice when the key is in the "crank" position and not in the "run" position. If its not and your fuses are good it could be a fusable link. Or maybe a bad ignition switch or a wire in the steering column. It's worth a check anyway.
